I went to get my hair trimmed and somehow I walked out with hair that was seven inches shorter and really love it. I kept looking at myself for days thinking; this is so familiar. I’ve never had so many layers before so I’ve never looked like this. I kept trying to think if it was like anyone else’s. Then while watching Gilmore Girls it finally hit me. I have Lorelai’s season 3 hair. Nicely done subconscious nicely done.

I think one of the ways that I’m like Rory is that I get hung up on the little things. This is illustrated perfectly during the episode called “The Lorelai’s First Day of Yale” The girls walk into Rory’s dorm. Lorelai is trying to point out how cool it is and all Rory can do is worry about getting rid of the old mattress, ripping her map, finding a replacement map, and noting the emergency exits.

Lorelai pushes her out of the room and tells her that she is missing it and they are going to do this right. She tells her daughter she has to savor the moment. Sometimes we all need to be pushed out of the room and made to start over. So this year, I’m going to try not to miss the things that are really important. Has Gilmore Girls inspired you to make any resolutions?

When I first started trying to be a Gilmore Girl it was all about the stuff. I had to get a shearling lined jacket. I had to build a snowman that looks like Bjork. Now as I’m older I’ve come to appreciate the show for what it is: a series of brilliant women who don’t define themselves by anyone else’s standards.

They don’t get sidetracked by recessions. (Well the show ended before then but I’m just guessing they wouldn’t). They don’t pay attention to things that should be impossible like getting into Ivy League schools or starting their own inns. They decide what they want and they go after it full force. More than any other inspiration as a freelance writer for the past six years, the Gilmores are what has kept me going. I live in a world where companies constantly go out of business and rules change and the sky is always falling. However, I learned from Lorelai that if even if you fail at something; it can still be the best two years of your life. Have the Gilmores inspired you?

2. Someone else was surprised that I still run a Gilmore Girls blog. They asked if anyone even still searched for Gilmore Girls now that the show is over. This made me so grateful for all the people who still show up and read and comment here; so thank you. I am trying to coin the phrase “It’s not a tv show; it’s a way of life”.

I’ve noticed that as I’ve gotten older I’ve been having different parallels with Lorelai. I recently had the opportunity to go into business with a family member. At first I thought “No, they always say business and family just doesn’t mix”. Then I really though about both of our situations and skill sets and it just seemed like the only way that either of us could really make it. My only basis for going through with this is Lorelai. She started a business with Sookie. Sure there were a few episodes with conflict. However, she even works with Sookie’s husband Jackson. They get to be around the people that they love all day. Sure there will be conflicts but think about how you feel about both your coworkers and your boss right now. You make it work and they aren’t even people that you actually like. I really hope that the TV is right on this one.

At first I’m tempted to say no; just because she did get pregnant as a teenager. However, every minute after that she seemed to step up and take responsibility. Sure, she’s a fictional character; but compare her mothering techniques to what you’d see on Teen Mom. (I think that’s what it’s called. I don’t watch it).

She is my role model just because she’s single and happy. She has her family and her friends and her work and her zany life. Living in Utah and being 29 and unmarried people often remark on how miserable my life must be. However, when I look at chances I have had to get married; that’s when I’d use the word miserable. I love my life. Someday; I will meet Luke and that will change. Watching Lorelai was one of the first times it dawned on me that being single was kind of awesome; and it kind of is. Do you think that Lorelai is a good role model?

This is something that happens to Lorelai a lot; especially around Emily. She often has to explain that she wasn’t being offensive it was one of her funny jokes. I think it’s easier to live with on the show than in real life. At least then Lorelai has an audience to laugh at her and Google her obscure references so that they can figure out why it is funny. I think in real life it just means I’m not that funny. Anyone else with a Gilmore sense of humor out there and do you tell jokes knowing that no one else will get them?

One thing I love about Gilmore Girls is how they celebrate birthdays. It’s an event that takes several days. Some years there are multiple parties if the grandparents are involved. The exception to this is Rory’s 21st birthday because she and Lorelai are in a fight, so Emily gets to throw the party and it’s all formal and breaks my heart.

The one good thing about that episode is when Lorelai looks at all of the gifts and comments about it being a present mountain. At least I’m pretty sure that’s what she says. It better be what she says, because it’s what I say now. It’s just so much more fun then calling a heap of toasters at a wedding “the gift table”. It’s a present mountain.

I often describe my perfect man as being Luke Danes. I still haven’t found him yet. I should probably be more specific and say “I want Luke Danes minus all of the season 6 & 7 nonsense”. However, whenever I describe him to other people it seems like they are shocked that I want to date someone like that. I guess I just see all of the positives: the ruggedness, owning a diner and always having food around. Someone who’s stable and likes small town life. Plus, he’s always doing sweet things for Lorelai.

What other people see is someone who is grumpy. Someone who has trouble showing affection. I’m slightly sarcastic and love how he just grumbles that “the moment’s here” when he’s going to propose. So, for me, even though he’s slightly grumpy he is still a step above anyone else; even if they have a sunnier disposition. However, a real life Luke Danes might not be as apt to make over the top gestures like building a pond so I could ice skate. In that case, it would just be mostly grumpiness and really that guy isn’t that hard to find. Yes, I’ve thought about this way too much. What do you think, would Luke’s grumpiness bother you in real life?

Here’s something I share with Lorelai: I can’t fold a map. In fact, I really can’t fold anything. I am a very neat and tidy person and my house is always clean. However, whenever someone goes over all the methods of how to fold something I get frustrated. My method of laundry is either to hang up my clothes, or to get them into sort of a square shape. From the Road Trip to Harvard I found out that Lorelai also shares my inability to fold things. When Rory says that she’s folding it incorrectly Lorelai replies that it’s smaller.

Can you fold a map?

Here are some other ways that I’m like Lorelai; even though I don’t have a kid.

No one laughs at my jokes but I keep telling them anyways.
I’m waiting for Luke.
I own my own business.
I wear boots a lot.

I still need a Sookie-esque best friend.

How are you like Lorelai?
