During the episode of Gilmore Girls called Nick & Nora/Sid & Nancy we see first meet Jess. Jess is Luke’s rebellious nephew. He has really become so rebellious that his mom can’t handle him. Since Luke is such a stabilizing influence he really just ends up offering to have Jess come live with him. No one consults Jess or how he’s really going to adjust to life in such a small town and being away from his family and his friends.
In usual Luke fashion he just assumes that he will be able to fix whatever problems might be there even though he has never had kids or doesn’t know a whole lot about them. Lorelai tries to tell him that he’s getting into a lot more than he can handle but Luke refuses to listen because his family needs him. Instead, we see Jess’ arrival in Stars Hollow even though Luke only lives in a small apartment above his diner and there really is no room for him. We immediately see that Jess is going to have a lot of conflict with such a quaint town.
One of the more hallmark episodes in season one is Rory’s dance. Gilmore Girl Rory is going to her first school dance. However, she has a hard time asking Dean to go with her just because it’s her school. Unfortunately, Tristan is also going to be there, and she doesn’t yet understand that he’s always such a jerk to her because he likes her.
This is also an episode where we see Lorelai’s skills as a seamstress. She developed them as a young mother when she needed to make clothes, or repurpose clothes into quilts to save money. Emily even approves of the dress. However, Lorelai gets hurt making it and Emily stays over to help her thus turning into one of the most brutal fight on the show. First it starts with Emily and Lorelai and is then passed down from Lorelai to Rory after Emily leaves.
One of the things that Rory & Lorelai have in common is that they each have close friendships outside of their family with people who aren’t Gilmore Girls. This is important and probably one of the reasons why their mother & daughter relationship works so well. They each have another friend their own age to bounce ideas off of and to help them understand whatever is going on at home.
Sookie is Lorelai’s best friend, and Lane is Rory’s. Really the two women couldn’t be more different. However, they do share the constant quality of always being there. Even when they have fights they always make up at the end of episodes. Lane is more grounded and Sookie is more out there. However, Lane does have a punk edge rocker inside of her and the fact that she knows so much about music really appeals to Rory’s need to know all different kinds of trivia so they do have that in common.
