When I first got the book “The Master & Margarita”, by Mikhail Bulgakov, my thought was “Oh crap” for the following reasons:
I thought it would be a contemporary novel. It isn’t.
Also, I haven’t had the best of luck with the Russian writers so far. They tend to be quite wordy.
There was a giant satanic looking cat on the cover. I am afraid of cats.
I was mistaken. Not wrong, I am never that. It was quite an enjoyable read & went a lot faster than I was expecting. The basic plotline is what if the devil came to town as a cat? At least, I think that was a plotline. I’m sure that there are a lot of metaphors for a communist government, that I just didn’t understand because I was laughing about the cat thing. Finally, someone agrees with me about cats.

I’ve been noticing a trend with June 3rd on “Gilmore Girls”. June 3rd was Rory’s court date. June 3rd was also the date of Lorelai & Luke’s canceled wedding. Coincidence? Does Amy Sherman Palladino have a dark day & is it June 3rd? Discuss it amongst yourselves. Well no, actually discuss it with me, because I want to know.
Read More“The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of those books that I felt like I had already read. After all, I watched “The Simpsons” parody it, so there was really no reason to read it, right?
When I picked up the book, I realized that I didn’t really know the story. I knew that there was a woman who committed adultery & had to wear a Scarlet A, which really doesn’t account for 250 pages. I just said it in one sentence, so certainly there had to be more to the story & there was. This was one of the first classics off of Rory’s book list that I can actually see why it is a classic. I haven’t enjoyed reading a classic this much since “Little Women”. My only complaint is that on every copy of this book, Hester is well, not pretty & not at all like I had imagined her. On the copy I had she looked balding.
