“The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of those books that I felt like I had already read. After all, I watched “The Simpsons” parody it, so there was really no reason to read it, right?
When I picked up the book, I realized that I didn’t really know the story. I knew that there was a woman who committed adultery & had to wear a Scarlet A, which really doesn’t account for 250 pages. I just said it in one sentence, so certainly there had to be more to the story, & there was. This was one of the first classics off of Rory’s book list that I can actually see why it is a classic. I haven’t enjoyed reading a classic this much since “Little Women”. My only complaint is that on every copy of this book, Hester is well, not pretty & not at all like I had imagined her. On the copy I had she looked balding, see for yourself.

I’d noticed that, too. Poor Hester…can’t catch a break.
