31 Aug 2007 You do not want to get married on Gilmore Girls

On TV shows, the brides usually look beautiful, at their best. This is not the case on “Gilmore Girls”

1. Emily. When Emily was having her vow renewal, we actually got to see her with several dresses when she was trying to choose which one to wear. Instead she settled on a stiff looking suit that looked like it was made out of couch upholstery.

2. Lane. Granted, the dress might have been better than what Mrs. Kim picked & I understood the need for modesty, but was it necessary for her to look ten years old? The dress got more confusing when it was shortened & a pink shirt was worn underneath. Not rock & roll at all. They seemed to have confused punk rock with demented “Little House on the Prairie”.

3. Lorelai, who has looked lovely in basically every other outfit that she has worn. Somehow, she ends up choosing a “perfect dress” that doesn’t suit her at all. It made me glad that she wasn’t going to marry Luke just so I wouldn’t have to see it again. sacrilege I know, but the dress was that bad.

Basically the only wedding dress on “Gilmore Girls” that has suited the bride was Sookies. I don’t know if it’s a commentary on marriage, or just bad fashion choices but blech.

27 Aug 2007 Rory’s Book Review: The Song Reader
 |  Category: Book Reviews  | Leave a Comment

If Rory’s Book Club were American Idol, “The Song Reader” by Lisa Tucker would’ve made it to Hollywood. Then it would have been cut out of the top twelve with Simon saying how you really need to bring your A Game with this level of competition. It would’ve been the book that got sent home en mass with all of the other books that were good, but not really memorable.

It wasn’t a bad book. It’s more of a book that would stand out if I hadn’t of read all of the other books. It was almost too much drama, but the underlying idea of being able to tell what people are going through by the songs that get stuck in their head is interesting. I just had trouble believing that it was a book that Rory would read.

24 Aug 2007 Mrs. Parker & the Vicious Circle

I had eagerly awaited watching “Mrs. Parker & the Vicious Circle” for several weeks. I’m not sure if they referenced it on the show, but I’m a huge Dorothy Parker fan & so are the “Gilmore Girls”. You must watch this movie. For less than five minutes. Anything longer than that will cause your brain to turn to mush. This is largely dependant on Jennifer Jason Leigh having the worst accent, EVER. In any movie. It was gilmoresque just for the sheer horror of that voice.

20 Aug 2007 Rorys Book Club: The Master & Margarita

When I first got the book “The Master & Margarita”, by Mikhail Bulgakov, my thought was “Oh crap” for the following reasons:

  • I thought it would be a contemporary novel. It isn’t.
  • Also, I haven’t had the best of luck with the Russian writers so far. They tend to be quite wordy.
  • There was a giant satanic looking cat on the cover. I am afraid of cats.

I was mistaken. Not wrong, I am never that. It was quite an enjoyable read & went a lot faster than I was expecting. The basic plotline is what if the devil came to town as a cat? At least, I think that was a plotline. I’m sure that there are a lot of metaphors for a communist government, that I just didn’t understand because I was laughing about the cat thing. Finally, someone agrees with me about cats.
