09 Feb 2007 Easter Parade
 |  Category: Movies  | 2 Comments

Easter Parade (Two-Disc Special Edition)I watched “Easter Parade” with Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, & a lot of other people who are probably dead now. See? It’s that kind of sarcasm & bluntness that makes me usually not a musical person, the same way I don’t really dig most poetry. Say what you mean, & be done with it. I was expecting not to like Easter Parade (This movie was mentioned in “Dear Richard & Emily” when Lorelai buys Emily a DVD player & then walks up the stairs singing this). However, there were a few very Lorelai moments in this film, it was quite likeable & funny.  Plus it’s in Technicolor.  Nifty. I find myself longing for the days when a guy can be a balding, skinny, a jerk & still get the girl as long as he can dance. So to recap, “Easter Parade” I didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would. It’s a very light, happy film, it’s the kind of movie you watch when your mom visits. As musicals go, it ain’t bad.

Disclaimer:  To my knowledge the following scenario is completely fictional & is not to be construed as standard operating procedure for the CW.  I love it when my posts have disclaimers.

Writer 1:  "Ok, so we have Richard in the hospital with a heart attack, we need ideas here"

Writer 2:  "Alright, I’m seeing it, I’m seeing it.  How about we use this as an instance to realize how fragile life & love is & how we all need to have better relationships"

Writer 1:  "What do you think this is?  Season 3?  Wake up man.  This season is all about product placement.  Why do you think we do that recap of what everyone was wearing instead of mention books & gilmore-ism’s.  What we really need to focus in on is where we can fit in a great Diane Von Furstenburg jacket in here, they are in the hospital, put your thinking caps on people. So Grandpa Gilmore, I’m not seeing a lot of him this episode.  Let’s focus on Logan & some future business mistake he’s going to make.  We can sell a lot of stuff off of Logan, like hair gel & pomade.  Are the cool kids still saying pomade?  Someone check on that for me. Also, none of that touchy feely stuff like last time he was in the hospital.  Instead lets have all of the Gilmores being self-absorbed & heartless.

Writer 2:  "Brilliant, but let’s also throw in a little Christopher/Luke conflict because once Luke Danes is in your life he is in your life, & once a Christopher always a Christopher.

05 Feb 2007 Rory’s Book Club: The Namesake
 |  Category: Book Reviews  | One Comment

The Namesake: A Novel3 pop tartsThere are times, (Like the entire Season 6 of “Gilmore Girls), when I’m frustrated with the main characters. So instead, I just watch the show, hoping that Mrs. Kim will make an appearance. I felt this way about “The Namesake” by Jhumpa Lahiri. The author’s use of words & supporting characters is amazing. However, I just couldn’t get behind the main character: Gogol. Gogol spends the book complaining about his name.  At first, the concern is valid, & then I just start seeing him as whiney. I constantly felt like shouting ‘Oi with the poodles already’. Take the main character out & you have a story, a very good story. It was worth reading just because of how vivid the scenes were. I will definitely check out more of Jhumpa Lahiri’s work when I have made it through Rory’s book list. They didn’t give her a Pulitzer Prize for nothing. (She received it for “Interpreter of Maladies”). Has anyone else read “The Namesake”? Any thoughts?

02 Feb 2007 In case of emergency
 |  Category: Gilmore Girls  | 3 Comments

All the spoiler sites are abuzz with something that I hope is a rumor.  I’ve put off writing about this, I didn’t want to be an alarmist.  I just can’t take it any longer.  Consider this to be in case of an emergency post. Apparently Alexis Bledel wants out of "Gilmore Girls".  So the CW is trying to hang onto the show by trying out a storyline of Luke & Lorelai having a child together.  At first I thought, I would never ever watch this.  I thought about it a bit more & I probably would watch it.  However, the CW needs to understand that it’s just going to be me & about 4 other people tuning in.  This will upset a lot of peopl, but I & the 4 other people will be in for the long haul.  I will still be a fan of the show if the following conditions are met:

1.  I’ve always wished that they showed more of Rory’s growing up years.  If I was in charge of the show & had to have future seasons, I would turn it into a permanent flashback, a prequel.  Luke is still on the outs with me, so he can go back to being the diner guy.  We can see who Lorelai dated, & how she got Rory to be such an amazing kid.

2.  There is a problem with the fact that kids usually don’t talk when they first come out.  All the Gilmores do is talk. The natural thing, & by the natural thing, I mean the wrong thing, would be to focus on Luke & Lorelai.  I would suggest instead focusing on the townspeople, & how Lorelai deals with Rory’s absence & how she feels about having a daughter as a plot ploy.  There are still a lot of stories to be told in Stars Hallow, so lets focus on that.

3.  I think that the show needs to stay about mothers & daughters.  We’ve all seen what happens when there is too much emphasis put on boys.  The mere fact that in the creation of the show Luke’s character was actually written to be a cranky old diner lady is what the show is all about.  It’s not about Luke, it’s about growing up & living in a family, whether that family is your biological family, or your crazy townspeople.

4.  This needs to be a serious commitment.  If it’s just going to be one more season it will be craptacular.  You have to let us have time to see this baby grow up.  I want Lorelei’s kid to be best friends with Lane’s kids.

Having said all this, I have a request, if anyone finds out whether the season is being renewed or not, will you please come & tell me as soon as you find out.  I try to keep up to date on spoilers, but I do occasionally take time out for sleeping.  I will give you a link to your blog if you have a blog, if not, I will owe you a kidney or something.

Update:  Right after I wrote this post, I read this, which basically says it’s all a rumor & Alexis & Lauren are sticking together whatever the decision may be. I now feel the way I do when I’m awoken by the fire alarm in the middle of the night because it was low on batteries.  Why does this never happen in the daytime?  I am leaving this post because it makes me feel a little more like Lauren Graham.
