Rory’s Book Club: The Kite Runner

You know a book is good when you go to the library & four different bookstores & still can’t find it. “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini was definitely worth the struggle it took for me to find it. Every time I put the book down, I spent 5 solid minutes thinking “Wow, just wow”. It was heart wrenching, heart breaking at times, definitely not a book for kids, extremely intense. See? It’s so good I’m just using sentence fragments. It’s the kind of book that you can watch someone read because it will show on their faces. It is in my top 5 from Rory’s book club. (The other ones include: “The curious incident of the dog in the night-time”, “Life of Pi” “The Portable Dorothy Parker” & one spot yet to be determined).

Thanks to Sara for pointing out this site.  I am not actually thanking myself, but I’m sure I should for something. Anyways, the site is a great place, if you search for “Gilmore Girls” you can pick an episode.  It will have several outfits the girls were wearing & where to get them.  Like this knitting shirt I mentioned in a post I am now too lazy to go get the hyperlink for.  Give me a break, I’ve been working on my Stars Hallow village. Now I’m just getting cranky.  See how bad not having “Gilmore Girls” around is? This is the new Luke’s diner.  I made Lorelai & Rory out of salt dough complete with cute coats & scarfs.  (See how much time I have on my hands when GG is in hiatus?”). I made other townspeople, Mrs. Kim, Lane, Babbette & Maury, Kirk & Taylor. Notice I did not try to make April, Anna or even Christopher.  They are just plot lines to drag out during sweeps weeks & have no place in my Christmas village.  Anyways the other villagers weren’t to scale, they expanded & looked like walruses.  I don’t know what the plural of walrus is, probably just walrus, but I’ll end with walsuri because it sounds cool.

Rory’s Book Club Review: Life of Pi

I’ve never been trapped on a lifeboat for months on end with my only companion being an adult Bengal tiger. Consequently, it’s funny that “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel spoke so loudly to me. This book had an ickyness factor of probably pg-13. I don’t usually like books with ickyness because they are just icky. Add to this the fact that lots of people on Amazon didn’t like it. People on Amazon love everything. It takes a strong story that can have all this against it & still change my life. I don’t usually like metaphors. I like people who say what they mean.  This story was captivating enough to make me draw metaphors from my own life, & they were good metaphors too, if I do say so myself. This has become one of my top favorite 3 books of all time. If nothing else, at least read the dust jacket about the author & then flip to the front about the story.  I won’t ruin it for you.  If anyone else has read “Life of Pi” I would love to hear your thoughts. Bottom line, the man can write, he really can.
