Book Review: Stiff, The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers

Filed under: Book Reviews • Comments: 1

Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers Of all the books on Rory’s booklist I was looking forward the least to “Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers” by Mary Roach. Why would I want to read 294 pages about the decomposition process? I love Rory so much that I was dedicated to reading even this book and it was…brilliant. More than it was graphic & disturbing, this book was meaningful. It made me think about the many people who have to sacrifice so great discoveries can be made, and that they are never thanked or recognized. Mary Roach is also one of the funniest authors I’ve read in awhile, and I breezed through this book, very easy to read. One of the most unique looks at death, definitely worth a read.  Besides the fact that it just looks cool to be carrying a book where the front cover is a corpse’s feet with a toe tag on it. Plus, I now know so many delightful facts that I will count as my “dinner party conversation”. I’m going to be so popular.  I picked up this book expecting to get sick to my stomach, or as I like to call it feel vomity.  Instead, this was so touching I ended up crying. Have you read this book?  What did you think of it? To join Rory’s book club just find the link in the sidebar to the official site and get to reading!

Rory Gilmore Dress

Filed under: Gilmore Girls Fashion • Comments: None

iconicon I don’t remember the exact instance where Edward Herman (Richard Gilmore) said this, because I follow the Gilmore Girls so closely it all just gels in my brain. Anyways, he said something to the effect that he had acted with Audrey Hepburn & was now acting with this generation’s Audrey, (Alexis Bledel). Rory has very classic features and I love the way she dresses: part school girl/part old Hollywood star. For a Rory Gilmore outfit  have a high neckline, and a defined waist. Pretty dresses are great for everyday or Friday night dinners with the Gilmores. If your dress is sleeveless make sure that you have a shrug or cardigan to look extra innocent when necessary.

Rory’s Book Club Review: Old School

Filed under: Book Reviews • Comments: 1

Old School (Vintage Contemporaries) In my never ending quest to become like the “Gilmore Girls”, I am reading every book in Rory’s Book club. The next book I read was “Old School” by Tobias Wolff. I really didn’t get interested in this book until it was 80% over. It was the equivalent of going to a movie about a horse that runs a lot, being bored out of your mind, & then the horse randomly spontaneously combusts with 2 minutes left in the movie. Actually that would be a good movie, and this book didn’t have any horses in that.  Just in the last 50 pages it was apparent that Tobias Wolff can write, something he had forgotten to do in the rest of the book. I think the book is worth reading because it has very good descriptions of Robert Frost, Ayn Rand, & Ernest Hemingway. This made me more excited to read Ayn Rand & Ernest Hemingway’s book from Rory’s book club, so this book was an excellent precursor. Have you read “Old School” by Tobias Wolff, what did you think of it? Want to join Rory’s Book club? Click on the link in the sidebar for the official list and get reading.
